Episode 84 Human Milk Feeding and Diabetes the Research and One Person's Experience

Often when there is an extra complication like an illness, a disability, or a rare disease, human milk feeding can be made more difficult because well-meaning care providers don’t always provide the latest evidence based information. When early human milk feeding gets interrupted by outdated policies, this can have long lasting implications for the parent and the baby.

Today’s episode focuses on Diabetes, which is one such complication that often sets off a cascade of both prenatal and postpartum interventions that lead to prolonged breastfeeding/chestfeeding difficulty. This is a unique episode as it features both evidence based information presented by host and IBCLC Lo Nigrosh and an interview with Megan of Illuminated Birth who experienced breastfeeding as a person with Type 1 Diabetes.

This episode features information about:

  • Setting yourself up for baby feeding success if you have Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes

  • Research about preventing hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar) in the baby as a person with diabetes

  • Hand Expression during the 3rd trimester to harvest colostrum in case it is need for hypoglycemia

  • Information about milk making specific to people with Diabetes

  • Information about formula content versus human milk content as it relates to blood sugar regulation

  • The difference in blood sugar management between pregnancy and postpartum when the parent is nursing
